清末，北京城内板章路，有一家“南庆仁堂”药店。一天，店里两个伙计摆弄中药时，偶然用蝉蜕（知了壳）、莘荑（玉兰花凋谢后留下的毛绒状物）、白芨、木通这4味中药，做出了形象逼真的小毛猴儿。伙计的“创作”掌柜觉得很有意思。此后，店内便把这4味中药包在一起，作为“猴料”出售；“毛猴儿”也从此作为一种民间手工艺流传开。现今全北京会的人大概只有五个，而这些作品中多数都再现了老北京市井风情。这些奇特的手工艺品也被国际友人所称赞，成为一种受欢迎的纪念品。本页的宝贝是一群意气风发，马上封侯的角色，有步步高升的含义；它出自我国非物质遗产毛猴传人‘萧掌柜’之手，有收藏价值。

The “hairy monkey”, which is made by the cicada slough, is a kind of folk craft of old Beijing. It was first made in about mid-1800s by a guy who worked in a dispensary of traditional Chinese medicine. The limbs of the “hairy monkey” is made with the limbs of the cicada slough , the body of the “hairy monkey” is made of FlosMagnoliae, which is covered by a layer of brown hair, the head of “hairy monkey” is made from the head of the cicada slough. Sometimes a “hairy monkey” would wear a bamboo hat, which is made from Caulis Akebiae, another kind of Chinese medicine. The different parts of “hairy monkey” are then sticked together by common bletilla tuber, also one of the Chinese medicines. “Hairy monkeys” impersonate people from all walks of life, reflecting the past time of old Beijing.
